Guided Tours of some hidden gems in the Empordà region

Guided Tours of some hidden gems in the Empordà region

Guided Tours of some hidden gems in the Empordà region

Halfway between the city of Girona and the coastal towns on the Costa Brava, at the feet of Les Gavarres Massif Natural Space, there are small villages full of charm in which time has stood still. Feel the essence and the heartbeat of the authentic Empordà region walking through the streets and squares. Wake up to the views of the landscape of the Empordanet, described by the local author Josep Pla, enjoy a conversation around a table filled with local gourmet products and take-home a unique piece of pottery, handmade by one of the local craftspeople.

If you would like to go into places that were previously closed or to have stories explained to you that you won’t find written in any guide, sign up for our new guided tours 2016. Don’t miss the chance to be told stories about the mediaeval village of Monells or the nooks and crannies of the birthplace of the first president of the Generalitat of Catalonia in Peratallada. Go back in time from the largest Iberian settlement on the Iberian Peninsula to the tiny mediaeval village of Ullastret. Enjoy the emotion of going into Sant Miquel de Cruïlles Monastery to contemplate the interior of a gem of Catalan Romanesque architecture, or the Terracotta Museum to get to know the dynamic pottery industry in La Bisbal in a former factory or the inside of an Indian house (magnificent houses built by people who had gone to the Americas to seek their fortune and then returned home) in Corçà, which will be explained to you by members of the family.

Palace-Castle and architectural heritage

The Palace Castle of the bishops of Girona is an example of Civil Catalan Romanic architecture dating back to the 11-12th centuries. It is the most emblematic building in the city and one of the landmarks for the area. Aside from the castle, the old historic centre of La Bisbal features other treasures: the ward wall of the Palace Castle, the River portal , the Old Bridge, the Call (former Jewish quarter), the churches, the “Voltes”, the “Mundial” building.

The Palace Castle of the bishops of Girona is an example of Civil Catalan Romanesque architecture dating back to the 11-12th centuries. It is the most emblematic building in the city and one of the landmarks for the area. It is also a key part of the history of La Bisbal and the region. Since it was built it has always been in use. It has been the site of sieges and armed conflicts, and was used as a prison several times, most recently during the Spanish Civil War and post-war period.

The opening hours for visits are the same as those for the Tourist Information Kiosk at the castle

The Palace Castle is currently part of the Route of the origins of Catalonia. An audiovisual aid explains the conflicts between the feudal lords and their vassals in mediaeval times. And the noble floor can be visited thanks to some outstanding virtual historic characters. From the rooftop and more so from the tower, the views over the Emporda region are superb.

Further details about the castle in the brochure Palace Castle Tour Itinerary

The centre of La Bisbal also has other treasures: the ward wall of the Palace Castle, the River portal (the only entrance portal in the city walls that is conserved), the Old Bridge, the Call (Jewish district), the churches, the “Voltes”, the “Mundial”. If you visit the city, ask the Tourist Office for the leaflet with the route that covers the historic assets of the city. There you will find the most outstanding elements, with a small explanation for each one and a route designed to make the most of your visit. You may also ask for information on the guided tours that are offered by professional guides.

Fairs and markets

The weekly market held on Fridays is one of the longest standing in the region and covers a large part of the old town. Other traditional or modern trade fairs are held during the year: antiques, pottery, gastronomy...

The weekly market held on Fridays is one of the longest standing in the region and covers a large part of the old town. The right to hold the market was a privilege awarded to the city in 1322 by King James II. Until not so long ago it was the main platform for agricultural and cattle transactions in the region. It currently has 150 stalls with food, clothes, household objects and personal accessories.

Every year sees the Street Market Fair held on 1st May, a multi-sectorial fair involving the traders from the city and merchants from different parts of Catalonia. A ceramics fair is also held during this fair. The Street Market Fair on 1 May dates back to 1991, resulting from the reinvention of the traditional Pentecostal Fair, started in 1448 thanks to a privilege awarded by Queen Mary, wife of Alfonso IV the Magnanimous.

The importance of the sector of antiques dealers and restorers has resulted in a bi-annual Empordà Antiques Fair, one of the best known in Catalonia. The antiques and restoration fair is a clear commitment of the Town Council and the sector to promote and dynamise this activity, as La Bisbal has become a centre that is recognised nationally and internationally in this field. Antiques Empordà and its monographic offer has become a mandatory reference among fairs of this kind that are held in Catalonia.

Alternating with Antic Empordà, Fira Artesana takes place every two years too. Pottery and ceramics have the major role here, together with recognized master crafters in other disciplines.

Both Antic Empordà and Fira Artesana take place around Easter.

More recently, an autumn fair has been started called “Tastaolletes” which combines the utilitarian ceramics sector with gastronomy. Producers of ceramic crockery and restaurant owners from la Bisbal present their offer jointly during the weekend closest to 12 October.

Every September 11th, to mark the Catalan National Day, a fair of Toys, Vintage and Collectors Items has been held for almost 30 years. More recently, an activity has been added consisting of tastings of vermouth with soda before the midday meal (an old gastronomic tradition that had been lost for some time).

De compresTHE CERAMICS CAPITAL

Aigüeta street houses the majority of ceramics shops in town. These demonstrate the importance of the ceramics sector for La Bisbal. Most of the shops in Carrer Aigüeta are open from 10:00 to 20:30, Monday to Sunday, except Christmas, New Year's and very few other holidays.

TOWN OF ANTIQUE DEALERS

La Bisbal is also known for its antique shops, as the charm of restoring furniture has led to a series of workshops and related establishments being opened in La Bisbal d'Empordà. The Tourist Office has a list of associated antique dealers in La Bisbal and the region. Download the list of Antique and Vintange Shops in la Bisbal and nearby towns.

OPEN AIR SHOPPING CENTRE

La Bisbal d'Empordà has a large shopping area in the old town centre where one can find all kinds of shops and products. This is another attraction for visitors and is a place where one can shop in comfort. The majority of the shops open from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:30, Monday to Saturday.

Folk culture and festivals

La Bisbal offers new proposals such as the Street Circus Fair, proposals that recover rituals or traditions from other times, such as the “Correfoc”, the Bisbal “beasts” or the dances of the giants and capgrossos [big heads], and proposals linked to traditional culture, such as the summer town festival or sardana dance group meetings.

The Street Circus Festival in La Bisbal d’Empordà is held on the third weekend in July and it is a reference in Catalonia and internationally, despite its amateur nature. It has always been known for its original and avant-garde programme, for the quality of the companies and artists that take part and for the diversity of the genres.

Inspired in the Dance of the Devils (dating from the 12th century) which symbolised the fight between good and evil, the “Correfoc” is a parade-spectacle with fire where the Dragons set off bangers and firecrackers and create a visual spectacle that anyone can take part in if properly protected. It is one of the main events of the Local Festival, together with the parade and dance of the giants (a tradition dating back to the 14th century). The Local Festival, held on and around the 15th August, includes many children’s activities, sardana dance concerts, evening balls and performances by music groups for children, among others. It is the main festival in the city. On 17th August 2015, the BBC published the following paragraph on its website:

"Catalan festival marked with flames and fireworks

The annual festival of flames and fireworks has taken place in Catalonia. Known as Correfoc, meaning "fire run", the people of La Bispal D'Emporda, just north of Barcelona, are treated to displays of villagers dressed as devils warding off evil spirits by dancing to music. Other displays included whirling dragons who scattered their sparks amongst the huge crowds to the beat of local 'gralla' drums".

On the first Sunday in June La Bisbal hosts the Sardana dance group event, the festival of Catalan traditional dance and music.

The Remei meeting at Castell d’Empordà and the local festival at Sant Pol are traditional celebrations for these two towns in the La Bisbal region.

Aside from the above mentioned, different traditional festivals organised by local entities are held throughout the year.

Charming villages around La Bisbal

Charming villages around La Bisbal

La Bisbal is part of a landscape that is full of tiny charming villages: mediaeval walled villages, castles, monasteries, churches, country houses, bell towers, narrow streets and houses built of stone.

In other eras, La Bisbal was on a boundary line and its Castell Palau was threatened by the count of Empúries at Castell d’Empordà. On the other side, the village of Sant Pol has a Romanesque church. The Monastery of Sant Miquel de Cruïlles, also Romanesque, is one of the nearest attractions, where recently some romanesque-gothic paintings have been restored. Cruïlles also conserves ruins and walls of a mediaeval castle of the Catalan lineage bearing the name of the village.

Very close to La Bisbal is Peratallada, one of the most remarkable mediaeval ensembles in the country: three walled complexes, Romanesque church, porticoed square and a castle. From here one can travel to Pals, the other significant mediaeval ensemble.

Very close by are villages such as Monells, an important mediaeval market town with porticoed streets and a remarkable main square; Vulpellac; the Romanesque church of Canapost; the Gothic church and bell tower of La Pera, or the Gothic temples of Rupià and Foixà.
